Should I Retake 325 GRE for M7?

If your 325 GRE is at or above the published class average for the M7 programs you’re targeting and the rest of your profile isn’t flashing “quant risk” (light quant coursework, low grades in math/econ/stats, or a non-analytic job), don’t retake it; you’d be buying a marginal benefit with real opportunity cost. If your 325 is meaningfully below the typical M7 middle range, or your Quant is the weaker side and your transcript doesn’t reassure, a retake can be worth it only if you have a credible path to a material jump, not a one- or two-point nudge. Use two quick checks: first, compare your section percentiles to each school’s most recent class profile and aim to be clearly inside the comfort zone, not barely touching it; second, look at your last three official practice tests under realistic conditions and ask whether your average is at least 3-5 points higher than 325 with stable Quant performance. If not, your “retake plan” is really a stress plan.

Most applicants frame this as “Is 325 good enough for M7?” but the better question is “What job is my test score doing in my application portfolio?” A higher GRE only matters if it changes the story the committee tells about your readiness: analytic horsepower, academic preparedness, and classroom contribution. Run a fast inventory: list three concrete pieces of evidence your application already has for quantitative strength (grades, work outputs, certifications), then three for written/critical reasoning strength. If the test score is already redundant evidence, reallocate time to leadership impact, clarity of goals, and recommender alignment. If the score is currently carrying too much weight because other evidence is thin, either retake with a real study redesign or add a different proof point that admissions will actually trust.
